JOHN STORM/Special to Bullet News
Where is Niagara’s economy headed? That is a huge question as the report of provincial consultant Don Drummond continues to reverberate through Niagara. He’s recommended reducing payments to universities, colleges, hospitals and even some changes to the education system.
It will provide some challenges, says David Alexander, executive director of the Niagara Workforce Planning Board. Niagara must focus on its core assets, he says, including tourism, winemaking, culture and geography.
The planning board also assists with mentoring new professional immigrants, and with finding ways to keep young people in Niagara.
Hidden in the comments of this show is the notion that, once again, Niagara has to work as one and not engage in petty politics that are based on geographic boundaries.
Business, citizens and the world will travel across boundaries, yet in Niagara it seems only our political leaders want those boundaries.
