ST. CATHARINES – A tenant who couldn’t be accounted for after a fire ripped through a cluster of commercial buildings and apartments in St. Catharines Monday evening has been located.

Niagara Regional Police spokesman Paul Day tells Bullet News this morning that the 37-year-old man has been located and is “safe and sound.”

Fire broke out at the complex, located at 55 North St. and 99 1/2 Geneva Street shortly before 9:20 p.m.

A section of Geneva Street and North Street just south of Welland Avenue was closed to traffic for several hours while firefighters battled to bring the blaze, which consumed a large portion of the building, under control.

The investigation into the cause and circumstances surrounding this fire will be continued by the St. Catharines Fire Services, the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office and St. Catharines Fire Department.

The fire is being treated as suspicious at this point.

On Wednesday morning, police remained on scene providing security.

An official damage estimate has yet to be released.
