Thumbs Up to Niagara Health System supervisor Kevin Smith for his report to Ontario Health Minister Deb Matthews. Not everyone is going to agree with Smith’s recommendation that a new south Niagara hospital be built in Niagara Falls. But his report showed courage and vision, qualities that have been lacking with the NHS far too long.
Thumbs Down to the Niagara Region for spending $600,000 on an unnecessary traffic circle on Mountain Road in Niagara Falls. What is wrong with theses people? Do they have any concept of the value of taxpayer money? They are whining about hte province cutting funds for social services and they squander more than half a million dollars on pointless roadwork. Is it any wonder that we sometimes question the value of Regional government?
Thumbs Up to … us! Bullet News published its 5,000th story on Thursday.
Thumbs Down to all the raised man-holes on Drummond Road in Niagara Falls.
Thumbs Up to the Shaw Festival for consistently presenting an outstanding lineup of live theatre. There is still time for local residents to enjoy this year’s lineup of productions. It’s world-class theatre in our backyard.
Thumbs Down to drivers who feel compelled to swerve left before turning right, or vice-versa. Unless you are navigating a tractor-trailer, it is an unnecessary and perhaps even dangerous move.
Thumbs Up to Marineland and its owner John Holer for passing all inspections by various agencies. Let’s hope the protesters move along to their next ’cause’ and let this man alone.
Thumbs Up to the McGuinty government for averting a strike by teachers and working within a minority government to make this difficult situation come to a conclusion.
Thumbs Down go teachers punishing their students by cancelling after- school events and extra-curricular activities. Teachers work hard and deserve every cent they earn. However, this does not justify depriving students of an important part of their time in school because of their dissatisfaction with the government of the day.
Thumbs Down to Niagara Falls MPP Kim Craitor for skipping the teacher pay-freeze vote in the Legislature. This is not effective representation at Queen’s Park.
Thumbs Up to Art City in downtown St. Catharines this weekend featuring all the amazing local talent.
Thumbs Up to the Furminator for pets. It’s a brush that costs almost a hundred bucks, but well worth it in the time saved cleaning pet hair from your home.

Re “Thumbs up to Marineland and its owner John Holer for passing all inspections by various agencies.” This statement is false and misleading. The OSPCA and the Niagara Falls Humane Society have NOT yet completed their reports on Marineland. CAZA, the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums inspectors found nothing of concern at Marineland. However, CAZA is an organization to which Marineland pays membership dues and it is not an arms length inspection agency. I would imagine a failing grade for Marineland from CAZA would reflect poorly on the organization itself which purportedly holds its members to standards and guidelines for care of animals in captivity. The “protesters” of Marineland, individuals and various groups, share a common concern about the welfare and suffering of the animals there and not likely to move on to another “cause”.
Modern roundabouts are the safest form of intersection in the world. Search IIHS for FAQs and safety facts.
The first cost of any two choices is a poor way to compare. Life-cycle cost is the best (present value of future costs, a.k.a. net present value). When comparing modern roundabouts to signals for a 20-year life cycle (the standard period), modern roundabouts usually cost us much less. Costs to compare include: first cost (design/land/construction), operation and maintenance (electricity, re-striping, etc.), crash reduction, daily delay (what’s your time worth?), daily fuel consumption, pollution (generated), area insurance rates (this costs more where it is less safe to drive). Each of these things, and others, can be estimated for any two choices and everyone near or using the project area will pay some portion of all of these costs.
