19-year-old cyclist killed in collision on Merrittville Highway

A 19-year-old cyclist died Thursday night when he was struck by a car on Merrittville Highway near Decew Road.

Niagara Regional Police, EMS and Thorold firefighters responded around 9 p.m. to reports of a collision between a a cyclist and a car.



Police said a 24-year-old man from Smithville was driving his 2005 Saturn northbound on Merrittville Highway while the cyclist, from Campbellville, was coming south.

The Saturn and GT mountain bike collided in the northbound lane of highway. The rider was thrown from the bicycle to the road. He was taken to St. Catharines General Hospital and pronounced dead on arrival. The driver of the car was not injured.

The name of the cyclist is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin. The incident remains under investigation by detectives of the Niagara Regional Police collision reconstruction unit. Any witnesses are asked to contact investigators at 905-688-4111, Ext. 5500.
