CRIME: Niagara Falls man charged with arson

NIAGARA FALLS – A 49-year-old Niagara Falls man has been charged with arson in connection with a fire that spread from a dumpster to a hydro pole.

The incident happened Wednesday.



Niagara Regional Police say one of their officers was on patrol in the area of Main Street and Ferry Street when alerted to a fire behind one of the businesses.

Upon investigation, the officer discovered the fire was in a dumpster and it had spread to a nearby hydro pole.

Firefighters soon after arrived and extinguished the fire.

Damage is estimated at $6,000.

Later the same day, investigators arrested Leonard Stewart, 49, of Niagara Falls.

Steward is charged with one count of arson.

Meanwhile, police say they are “actively investigating a similar incident which happened earlier Wednesday in the area of Stanley Avenue and Spring Street.

Investigator’s also continuing their probe of an arson that occurred at Jack’s Cantina on Center Street on Nov. 8, 2011.
