UPDATED: St. Catharines Kiwanis Aquatics Centre closed while firefighters investigate cause of smoke in building

Bullet News

St. Catharines firefighters are investigating the cause of smoke in the building at the Kiwanis Aquatics Centre.

Firefighters responded to an alarm around noon Friday. No injuries were reported.

Staff and visitors reported smelling and seeing smoke on the pool deck. Staff activated the building’s fire alarm and got everyone outside.

Firefighters found light smoke in the basement but no actual fire. The cause of the smoke is believed to be the pool’s air handling unit.

The pools remain closed while the library is open. The Lawrence and Irene Locke Program rooms are also open. Rentals and programs that take place in these rooms will continue to run as scheduled.
