Dog rescued from Welland River after spending an hour in the icy water

Bullet News

Emergency crews in Wainfleet were called to the Welland River Sunday afternoon when a dog broke through the thin ice and spent about an hour in the cold water at Chippawa Creek Conservation Park.

The dog was eventually recsued by the Haldimand County Fire Department with help from the Wainfleet Fire Department, Niagara police and humane society.

The dog was taken to a vet in Dunnville for examination.

Police warn that recent fluctuations in temperatures cause rivers, lakes, ponds and other bodies of water to appear to be frozen over.  However, several of these bodies of water have only a thin cover of ice and are extremely hazardous.  Police advise the public to use caution around these areas.
