UPDATED WORLD JUNIORS: Canada loses semifinal 5-1 to United States

UFA, Russia – Team Canada, undefeated in three games through the preliminary round, sputtered badly Thursday morning, losing 5-1 to the United States in the semifinals of the World Junior Hockey Championships.

Ty Rattie managed Canada’s lone goal in the third period after the American had already built a 4-0 lead. Canada will now play for bronze Saturday morning. Sweden beat Russia in the second semifinal.



U.S. captain Jake McCabe and John Gaudreau each scored twice for the U.S. and Jim Vesey also scored. Goaltender John Gibson stopped 26 shots for the win.

Canadian goaltender Malcolm Subban was chased from the game in the second period after allowing four goals on 16 shots.
