The Niagara IceDogs fell to the Sarnia Sting 2-1 in a shootout Sunday afternoon at the Jack Gatecliff Arena.
The first period saw both goaltenders on their game as the game remained scoreless throughout the frame. Shots after one period were 9-6 in favour of the IceDogs.
Sarnia found the scoreboard first in the second period, scoring quickly off a faceoff at 6:11. That proved to be the only goal of the period as the defensive struggle would continue and the IceDogs headed into the second intermission down 1-0. Shots after 40 minutes favoured Sania 22-13.
The defensive battle continued in the third as both goaltenders remained on their games keeping the score at 1-0 for the majority of the period. All that would change however at the 17:32 mark, as Trevor Petersen found the back of the net to tie things up for the IceDogs at 1-1. Shots after regulation were 32-21 in favour of Sarnia.
In the shootout, Steven Shipley and Luke Mercer were stopped and both Sarnia shooters scored on their attempts, giving Sarnia the 2-1 shootout victory.
The IceDogs play again Thursday at home to Owen Sound.
