OHL: Niagara IceDogs knock off Owen Sound in shootout

Special to Bullet News

The Niagara IceDogs picked up a 3-2 shootout victory over the Owen Sound Attack at the Jack Gatecliff Arena on Thursday night.

The IceDogs got on the board first as Brett Ritchie picked up a shorthanded goal on a one-timer only 10:40 into the period.  Owen Sound scored on the same powerplay to knot things up at 1-1.

The goaltenders were the story in the second as both teams had their chances in the frame, but Christopher Festarini and Jordan Binnington were on their game, putting up zeroes in the frame.

The IceDogs came out flying in the third, with Niagara having several near misses as they looked to take the lead in the first half of the second, but could not find the go ahead goal.

Owen Sound broke the deadlock, scoring at the 12:20 mark of the frame to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.  Steven Shipley tipped in a Jesse Graham point shot to tie things up again at 2-2 with 3:19 remaining.  The IceDogs continued their pressure late in the period as they looked for the winner.

Rookie Ben  Hughes scored the winner, the fifth Niagara shooter.

The IceDogs hit the road for the rest of the weekend as they head to Barrie on Saturday night before traveling to Kitchener on Sunday afternoon.
