Police were busy Wednesday connecting a crashed car on Highway 406 and the body of an adult woman found floating in the Welland Recreational Canal.
At 7:43 a.m. Wednesday the Niagara Regional Police were called after a construction worker spotted the body in the canal on the west side of the Highway 406 bridge. The Niagara Regional Police Marine Unite was called in to retrieve the body.
“They successfully retrieved the body,” said NRP media officer Const. Derek Watson, noting fire and emergency services also responded to the call.
Earlier in the morning, at 6:05, the OPP had been called to a single vehicle crash on the northbound lane of the highway at the north end of the bridge over the canal.
“The officers found the vehicle was unoccupied,” said Watson, noting police have identified the woman but could not release her identification as of press time pending the notification of the next of kin. Watson confirmed the woman is indeed connected to the vehicle but could not specify if she was the driver as the investigation is ongoing.
“It’s unknown how she ended up in the river,” said Watson, adding, “we don’t know much more.”
Any individuals with further information are being asked to contact Det. Const. Jay McNight at 905-688-4111 ext. 3335.
