Nick Roma was a typical teen until midway through his final year of high school in 2011 when he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a cancer of the white blood cells that if left untreated can be deadly in a short period of time.
After months of chemotherapy Roma’s cancer was in remission and he was able to attend his graduation with friends from St. Paul High School, but, due to complications soon after his 18th birthday, he developed a blood infection that led to clots resulting in the amputation of both his hands and feet.
Despite the unimaginable odds, Roma, or Nicky as he is affectionately known to those close to him, has proven himself a fighter and an extensive fundraising campaign has been initiated to raise money to the tune of $500,000 for his physical and psychological rehabilitation as well as prosthetics for all limbs.
Bullet News spoke with some of his fundraising campaign team at Antipasto’s Restaurant in St. Catharines, including Melissa Roma, Maria Scozzafava, Lucy Scaringi and Maria Spione as they prepare for a pasta night tonight dedicated to his cause.
The impassioned group of women that are friends and family call Nick their “superhero” and Scaringi described the closeness the group feels for his cause saying “we’ve watched Nick grow from a child to a teenager.”
Spione chatted about the teen and his inspirational story saying he “is a genuinely kind, loving, spirited young man and he’s just so overwhelmed by the love shown by the community. He continues to inspire us each day because he just smiles and smiles and he has a very optimistic outlook on life and he is very optimistic about his future and the more love the community shows for him, the more optimistic he becomes.”
Right now she says “ we are at approximately $170,000 and we have many many fundraisers going on.”
