POLICE: Youth accused of fabricating assault complaint

Bullet News

NIAGARA – Niagara Regional Police have charged a 17-year-old youth with public mischief in connection with a false complaint called into 911.

The incident happened Jan. 27 around 4:30 a.m.

That’s when 911 dispatchers received a call reporting a violent assault was in progress at a location in the north end of Welland.

Multiple police units, including Uniform Patrol and the Canine Unit attended the area in response to the call.

“The perceived seriousness of the reported incident resulted in an escalated police response,” police said in a statement Monday.

Once on the scene, officers quickly realized the 911 call was in fact a prank call.

Police immediately opened an investigation into the source of the call, eventually leading to the arrest of a 17-year-old male.

The name of the youth cannot be released due to the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
