Driver who crashed into Wainfleet town hall in stable condition

A 45-year-old Fenwick man who was airlifted to Hamilton Hospital in critical condition Sunday morning is now in stable condition.

Niagara OPP Staff Sgt. Jan Idzenga said that as of Wednesday the man’s condition had been upgraded.

He was taken to hospital after driving into Wainfleet’s town hall off Hwy. 3 early Sunday morning, a collision that also injured his two passengers.

Emergency responders were called to the scene near the corner of Feeder Road at around 1:13 a.m. for reports of a single vehicle collision. Investigators determined the vehicle – for some unknown reason – left the roadway and drove into the township building.

The driver was taken to Welland County General Hospital and then transferred by air ambulance to Hamilton in critical condition. The two male passengers were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Wainfleet CAO Scott Luey said there was minimal damage to the building, which dates back to the late 19th century. A few bricks were chipped off the corner of the building, but other than that everything was fine, he said.

The collision didn’t impact operation at town hall.

The collision remains under investigation by the OPP Traffic Support Unit. Witnesses are asked to call Const. Culp at 905-356-1311.
