Register for public meeting about Niagara Greenbelt

Niagara This Week

Niagara residents are invited to a public consultation session on the Ontario Greenbelt on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at the Ball’s Falls Centre for Conservation in Lincoln.

The Region, which plans to launch an extensive public consultation process to create a made-in-Niagara report on the future of the Greenbelt as the 10-year anniversary of the controversial plan approaches, said the session will be a chance for residents to voice their opinion on Greenbelt issues and opportunities.

The Greenbelt, established by the Liberal provincial government, is designed to protect valuable land from development. It cuts a large swath through areas of north Niagara in Lincoln, Grimsby, Pelham, St. Catharines and Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The province has pledged to review the Greenbelt every 10 years. That 10-year anniversary comes in two years, and the Region wants to have a report ready before then to submit to the province.

The Feb. 26 public session, which will be facilitated by a consulting firm hired by the Region, takes place at the conservation area at 3292 Sixth Ave. from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Registration is encouraged, but not required. People can register by calling Natasha Smagata at 905-685-4225 ext. 3459. For more information, visit www.niagararegion.ca.
