Thumbs Up to healthy kidneys, homemade soup and Venom; Thumbs Down to provincial Tories, February blahs and casinios paying less in taxes

Thumbs Down to the provincial Tories for so quickly giving their own thumbs down to the Throne Speech delivered this past week by newly minted Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne. Sure, one of the jobs of the opposition is to oppose and to set itself up as the government in waiting. But good governance calls for compromise when possible and for the betterment of public policy and the people of the province. Tory leader Tim Hudak could have at least waited for the budget to be delivered before coming out so strongly against the government.

Thumbs Up to the new Niagara Falls Kidney Care facility on Queen Street. This is a much needed facility that will save those who use it countless hours of saved travel by being able to get the life saving treatments they need right here in Niagara Falls where they live.

Thumbs Up to all of the community groups and organizations, including the Niagara Parks Commission, who sponsored or hosted Family Day Weekend events. It’s a invented holiday, but these groups have in a few short years helped put some meat on the bones of what would otherwise be just a day off work in the middle of winter. Thanks for making the Niagara a better place to live.

Thumbs Up to the organizers of the Niagara Falls Comic Con who aredeliberately putting together a stellar lineup of celebrity autographsigners. Adam West, who played Batman in the notorious 1960s television series (and who some maintain is the “real” Batman), is now scheduled to appear on both days of the show slated for June 8-9 at the convention centre in Niagara Falls. West remains a celebrity icon for the baby-boomer generation nearly 50 years after hitting it big on the small screen. And now we’ll have the opportunity to interact with him. How cool is that?

Thumbs Down to dark clouds, freezing rain, and the build up of sand and salt on nearly every vehicle on the road. Thankfully spring is just around
the corner, but it’s hard not to grow weary of all the dreary at this time
of year. Can’t wait to add a little colour back to the great outdoors.

Thumbs Up to the Venom Display at Niagara Butterfly Conservatory. That’s a good opportunity for kids to learn about some of nature’s most misunderstood creatures and discover the Truth, Dispel the Myths. All kinds of venomous animals: arachnids, amphibians and snakes are waiting for you.

Thumbs Down to casino property tax cut, which means other people must cover the budget shortfall.

Thumbs Down to the February blahs.

Thumbs Up to homemade soup to take you through the blahs.
