NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE – A $200-million outlet shopping centre being built in Niagara-on-the-Lake will open to the public a year from now.
Officials with Ivanhoé Cambridge, the company behind the project, announced on Tuesday The Outlet Collection at Niagara will open in May 2014.
The new outlet centre will feature nearly 100 big-name retailers, including Banana Republic, Bench Outlet, Brooks Brother Outlet, Calvin Klein, Forever 21, Gap Outlet, Izod, Michael Kors Outlet, Naturalizer, Osh Kosh, Tommy Hilfiger and Van Heusen.
Bass Pro Shops has also chosen this location to open their third anchor store in Canada, officials said during a ceremony held at the construction site.
“We are very excited to build an exceptional new shopping experience for the residents and visitors of the Niagara Peninsula and beyond,” said David Baffa, senior vice-president of retail development, Central Region at Ivanhoé Cambridge.
“The Outlet Collection at Niagara will not only contribute to the region’s economy but will bring our retail expertise to a new market while reinforcing our position as a leader in the Canadian shopping centre industry.”
Building the 520,000-square-foot complex is expected to generate 1,000 construction jobs.
After opening, some 1,500 people will work at the mall, which is located near the QEW at Glendale Avenue.
Lord Mayor Dave Eke, one of the local dignitaries on hand for Tuesday’s ceremony, said the development will be a boon to the local economy.
“We are thrilled to see this development finally underway,” said Eke.
“Our staff has worked very hard these last two years to bring this project to this point. Both the construction of the site and the centre’s operation, once completed, have the potential to create thousands of jobs and increase tax revenue for our area.”
