Health Minister Matthews said she couldn’t approve a new south Niagara hospital as she hadn’t even been submitted a proposal.
Wait a minute! Her hired gun, Niagara Health System supervisor Kevin Smith rode into Niagara and made the proposal for a new south Niagara hospital.
Now the province is ignoring that?
I think because they (Smith and Matthews) had no intention of approving such a preposterous proposal.
If you read through the HIP (Hospital Improvement Plan), Smith’s report and the various other reports, you may realize the end goal of the Ministry of Health, the NHS and the Local Health Integration Network is to gradually consolidate all acute inpatient, hospital care at the new St. Catharines complex.
The remaining older hospitals will either disappear, be sold or become debilitated chronic-care facilities with no 24/7 emergency departments.
I believe Smith’s job was to distract us with the possibility of a new hospital, while consolidation of services to St. Catharines takes place.
He can holster his guns now, and return to Hamilton as his job is well on the way to being done.
