NIAGARA FALLS – Niagara Regional Police say they have located a vehicle that sank in the Welland River in Niagara Falls and confirmed no one was inside.
The incident happened Thursday.
Police say around 10 p.m., they received a 911 call from a citizen located along the Chippawa Parkway in Niagara Falls.
The caller reported seeing a vehicle floating in the Welland River, which is also known locally as Chippawa Creek.
The vehicle sank before emergency crews arrived at the scene.
Niagara Regional Police, Niagara Falls Fire Department and Niagara EMS responded to the call. The vehicle was eventually located using sonar, but no immediate attempt could be made to recover the vehicle.
Due to water conditions and poor visibility, recovery of the vehicle could not be made that night.
During an underwater search on Friday, police discovered a BMW that had been stolen from Hamilton.
In total, five vehicles were found in that area. Arrangements will be made at a later date to recover them from the water, police say
