SARNIA – The Niagara IceDogs defeated the Sting 4-3 Saturday night in Sarnia, tying the game with 36 seconds to send the game to overtime and before picking up the win in the shootout.
The first period would see Sarnia strike first, scoring 4:33 in to take a 1-0 lead.
That would prove to be the only goal of the period, as the IceDogs headed to the intermission down one.
Shots after one were 10-7 IceDogs.
The IceDogs would find the scoreboard first in the second, as Carter Verhaeghe would continue his red hot start to the season, scoring at the 6:52 mark of the frame to knot things up at 1-1.
Momentum would stay with the IceDogs throughout the period and with 4:30 remaining in the second, IceDogs captain Jesse Graham would put one home to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.
The IceDogs would maintain that lead through the rest of the period, going into the third period up 2-1.
Shots after two favoured Niagara 22-18.
The third period would see Sarnia tie things up 6:12 into the frame and then take the lead at 3-2 less than two minutes later.
Despite their deficit, the IceDogs would continue to battle and finally with 36 seconds remaining in regulation, Alexander Protapovich would pick up his first OHL goal to tie things at 3-3 and send the game into overtime.
Overtime would solve nothing, as the IceDogs headed to their first shootout of the season. In the shootout, Carter Verhaeghe would get the IceDogs started on the right foot scoring to get things going and Chris Festarini would take it from there, stopping all three Sarnia shooters to give the IceDogs a 4-3 shootout win.
The IceDogs will now finish off their weekend by visiting the Windsor Spitfires Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
Fans can once again catch all the action live on both 610 CKTB and TVCogeco, as the IceDogs will look to move to 3-0 on the weekend.
